“The God molecule truly confers individuals the opportunity to dissolve completely all our preconceived cosmovisions, Ego perceptions and illusions as we experience a merging into the Oneness of all things. To feel Infinity, a face-to-face encounter with Source. By self-realisation of our divine nature and the true energetic nature of our living reality, we can truly unravel all our human expression to the point of achieving a full healing process; by complete analysis of our lives, of our lineage, and also curing individuals on all levels: mind, body, and soul. To experience the inter connective-ness of all things that were, that are, and that ever will. To live a billion-year-old process within ourselves, and to be freed from our physical bound form for only 20 minutes Earth time.”

This is a continuation of the Plant Medicine Experiences that both Karis and I have undergone. Please see Kambo Blog for more context.
The first time I heard about Bufo Alvarius, I was a skeptic. It was during a conversation with a healer friend. She spoke of a 20-minute experience so powerful that people felt as if they had met God or dissolved into the universe. I remember thinking, “Could something this profound be packed into such a short timeframe?”
Yet, curiosity got the better of me. Fast forward to today, and not only have I tried Bufo, but I’ve also witnessed countless transformations—emotional, psychological, and even spiritual. But, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Let’s break down the essentials of Bufo Alvarius, the Sonoran Desert toad, and the profound journey it offers.
What is Bufo (5-MeO-DMT)?
Bufo alvarius, also known as the Colorado River toad or the Sonoran Desert toad, is a species of amphibian that has long been shrouded in mystery and intrigue. These toads are found in Western Mexico and some states in the US and possess a potent psychedelic substance called 5-MeO-DMT, which is secreted from their venom glands as a defense mechanism against predators. This unique and powerful substance can only be found within the venom of the Bufo alvarius toad, making it a highly sought-after and rare experience for those interested in psychedelics.
Bufo itself falls into the category of Entheogens. Here is an extract from - Being Human An Entheological Guide to God, Evolution and the Fractal Energetic Nature of Reality by Martin W. Ball, PhD.
‘The key to this process is personal work with entheogens, or substances that generate the experience of God within. With these tools, you can experience everything that will be shared in this guide directly for yourself with no religions, gurus, priests, or shamans standing between you and your direct experience of reality.‘
This Medicine removes the parts that we strive to integrate for a moment and allows us to really tap into the other side of this experience, moving from the Human to the Being.
But the story of Bufo Alvarius doesn't end there. When the venom is extracted and dehydrated into crystals, it creates a mind-bending, intense experience that lasts only 15-30 minutes, yet is 5 times more potent than the popular psychedelic DMT.
Although 5-MeO-DMT has a history of traditional use in other plants, there is no evidence or lineage of any indigenous Bufo alvarius practices. This raises many questions about the true origins and potential uses of this powerful substance.
With a lifespan of 20 years, the Bufo alvarius toad spend most of the year in hibernation, only resurfacing to breed during the monsoon rains. So not only is Bufo a rare and unique experience, but also an elusive one.
History Behind Bufo
Bufotenine is a psychedelic compound found in the skin and glands of certain species of toads, including the Bufo alvarius, also known as the Sonoran Desert toad. It has been used for thousands of years in traditional medicine and shamanic practices. According to anthropologist Peter Furst, the use of Bufo toad venom dates back to the Neanderthal era. Many ancient cultures have used the toad for medicinal and spiritual purposes.
The substance derived from the venom of Bufo alvarius is 5-MeO-DMT, which is an extremely potent psychedelic. It is four to six times stronger than its better-known relative DMT (dimethyltryptamine). This compound is also found in some psychoactive plants.
5-MeO-DMT is classified as a Schedule I drug by the US government, making it illegal to manufacture, distribute, possess, or buy. However, in Mexico, it is not regulated. Despite its illegal status, many people seek out this powerful psychedelic, and shamans in Mexico and the southwestern US have been harvesting and smoking the substance for centuries.
Some people who have smoked Bufo alvarius venom describe it as a life-altering experience, with intense and relatively short-lived effects that last about 30 minutes. Many people report that the experience is powerfully transformative in a good way, but it's important to note that the effects can vary greatly from person to person.
Today, science is catching up with these mystical accounts. A growing number of researchers are studying Bufo and other hallucinogenic substances as potential treatments for mental health conditions such as depression, PTSD, and addiction. Studies have shown that these substances can have a positive impact on the brain, resulting in changes in neural activity and connectivity, and influencing the release of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine. However, more research is needed to fully understand the potential therapeutic benefits of Bufo and other psychedelics.
What Are the Possible Benefits of Bufo (5-MeO-DMT)?
Research suggests that 5-MeO-DMT may have potential as a treatment for anxiety and depression. Studies have shown that it may down-regulate a receptor involved in the reward mechanism of drug abuse, making it an effective adjunct to Ibogaine therapy for addiction treatment. Additionally, cells treated with 5-MeO-DMT have been found to have a similar response to anti-depressant medications. However, further research is needed to fully understand the anti-depressive properties of 5-MeO-DMT.
There have also been suggestions that 5-MeO-DMT could be useful in understanding the neurobiological basis of hallucinations and for the development of antipsychotic drugs.
Bufo is also known for the treatment of the following ailments/diseases, among others:
Increases feelings of euphoria and well-being
Alleviates symptoms of depression and anxiety
Enhances spiritual experiences and self-discovery
Improves focus and concentration
Increases empathy and connection with others
Reduces symptoms of PTSD
Help in addiction recovery
Promotes deep relaxation and stress relief
Enhances creativity and problem-solving abilities
A connection with the universe and feeling of being one with all
Being centred and connected with consciousness
Abolition of suppressed traumatic memories that create suffering, addictions, and psychosomatic illnesses
Improves overall sense of physical and emotional well-being.
A recent study published on PubMed suggests that inhaling bufo vapour containing 5-MeO-DMT can have a significant impact on an individual's cognitive well-being. Conducted in a natural setting, the study found that participants reported a post-toad "afterglow" which allowed them to detach from negative behaviours, thought patterns, and even past trauma. This led to an increase in life satisfaction, mindfulness, self-awareness, and a decrease in psychopathological symptoms. It was also noted that shortly after experiencing the effects of the vapour, participants returned to their normal, sober state.
How is Bufo Administered?
The journey begins with a dried and crystallized form of the venom, carefully harvested from the toad without causing harm. During a Bufo ceremony, participants inhale the vaporized venom, typically through a glass pipe. The process is simple, but what follows is anything but.
Participants are usually asked to lie down in a relaxed setting. The facilitator often engages in shamanic rituals such as drumming or chanting to help ground the participant. Once the vapor is inhaled, the effects kick in quickly—usually within minutes.
How to prepare for a Bufo Ceremony
The Prep for this entheogenic ceremony was not as intensive as expected. Kambo prep was far more intense physically, yet the mental component regarding this experience was far more prevalent. Knowing that you are having to let go of control and trust the process is a very different sensation.
The practitioner will want to assess you before the ritual begins. Before each ceremony, applicants are vetted by phone to review their medical history and if this is the right medicine for them.
Sarra (the facilitator) made it abundantly clear that not everyone gets an invitation to experience this medicine, due to the nature of the medicine itself. If you are not in the right space this could do far more harm than good. Before the decision to move forward, there was an extensive application, conversations and full disclosure relating to the risks associated with the medicine and a mild idea of what the experience would be.
Once both Karis and I got the go-ahead we had to basically fast for 12 hours only water and black tea were allowed until approximately 2 to 3 hours before the ceremony - not as intense as Kambo fortunately.
The following is Worth Noting before considering this Ancient Medicine:
What Happens During A Bufo Ceremony?
A Bufo ceremony is a powerful and unique experience that is derived from the dried venom secreted by the Bufo alvarius toad. During the ceremony, participants inhale a single 50mg dose of the vaporized venom, which can produce hallucinations and boundless experiences that last anywhere from 7 to 90 minutes, with an average duration of 30 minutes. Many people who participate in a Bufo ceremony report having mystical experiences, including "seeing God" and gaining a deeper understanding of their place in the universe.
The ceremony begins with a shaman preparing a glass pipe filled with the toad medicine in crystal form. The user then inhales the smoke by taking a small puff and holding it in their lungs for a short period before exhaling fully. This ritual is often accompanied by various shamanic acts such as drumming, playing shamanic music, incantation or blowing smoke over the user's body.
Each person's experience during a Bufo ceremony is unique. Some users may feel as though they have travelled far away, while others may feel grounded. Some may have profound revelations, while others may experience moments of euphoria. Some may feel that they are in a better state of mind than before, while others may find the experience complex.
While under the influence of the venom, many individuals report feeling one with the universe and describe the experience as a "rebirth." However, the drug can also cause intense emotional reactions and physical symptoms such as euphoria, convulsions, and even vomiting.
The hallucinogenic effects of the Bufo alvarius venom typically begin around five minutes after inhalation and can last up to an hour for most users. The Bufo ceremony is a powerful and profound experience that can be life-changing for many people. It is important to note that the use of Bufo alvarius venom is not legal in some countries and should be used under the guidance of a qualified professional.
After The Ceremony, Post notes and Integration
Integrating medicine, like Bufo, into one's daily life requires time and patience. The post-ingestion period is crucial as it allows for the absorption of important information and insights. It is important to make space for any thoughts or emotions that may arise during this time. Integration takes place through space, honouring the insights without the expectation of the medicine having done or not having done anything profound beyond the experience.
Some individuals may experience strong emotional responses, such as uncontrollable sobbing, following ingestion. These reactions are normal and should not be met with feelings of guilt or overwhelm.
Additionally, some individuals may experience "reactivations" or echoes of the Bufo journey during sleep, specifically between 1 am and 4 am. This is often referred to as "night school" and may not happen for everyone. It is important to note that individuals who have a more peaceful lifestyle and are more spiritually in tune tend to have better experiences with Bufo medicine.
The Dangers Of Bufo Alvarius (5-MeO-DMT)
There are potential complications that may arise if an individual has not disclosed any specific mental health diagnoses, such as Bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. Therefore, it is important to thoroughly research and understand your emotional and mental state before engaging in any entheogenic practices. It is also crucial to work with a practitioner who has integrity and the proper training and tools to support you in your journey.
1. Health Considerations
Good Overall Health Required: The intense nature of Bufo Alvarius requires participants to be in good physical and mental health. Those with underlying conditions may face severe reactions.
Heart and Blood Pressure Issues: Individuals with heart or blood pressure conditions are at heightened risk due to the drastic changes in heart rate and breathing that Bufo can induce.
2. Pharmacological Interactions
Lithium: Combining lithium with Bufo can cause fatal seizures and heart attacks, making it extremely dangerous for individuals on this medication.
Tramadol: This pain medication can trigger serotonin syndrome when combined with 5-MeO-DMT, a life-threatening condition characterized by high levels of serotonin in the brain.
SSRI Medications: Although rare, there is a theoretical risk of serotonin syndrome when taking high doses of Bufo alongside SSRIs, which are commonly prescribed for depression and anxiety.
MAOI Medications: Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) are linked to fatal interactions with 5-MeO-DMT, due to their role in altering neurotransmitter breakdown. These combinations have been linked to deaths in past ceremonies.
3. Facilitator Negligence
Poor or Negligent Facilitation: Many reported deaths associated with Bufo have occurred due to facilitators not prioritizing safety. This includes failing to monitor participants in distress or engaging in irresponsible practices.
Dangerous Practices: Some facilitators have used dangerous techniques such as forcing water into participants' lungs or administering electric shocks during ceremonies, resulting in tragic outcomes.
Research Your Facilitator: To minimize these risks, it’s essential to thoroughly research facilitators, ensuring they are experienced, well-trained, and prioritize participant safety throughout the ceremony.
4. Psychological Risks
Overwhelming Intensity: Bufo’s effects can be psychologically overwhelming, especially for those unprepared for the intensity. Users may experience ego dissolution or feelings of extreme panic.
Triggering of Mental Health Issues: Those with pre-existing mental health conditions like schizophrenia or bipolar disorder should avoid Bufo, as the experience may exacerbate these issues.
When I came back, I had never felt more gratitude and compassion for my human, for the life that I have lived, from every moment, person and breath that have had the privilege of experiencing.
The blanket of depression - that has been around for most of my life - has improved by at least 70 per cent - the thick fog is only a slight haze.
This was a full death and rebirth, a new lease on life and like one of my mentors loves sharing that “we are all swimming in the same water, the only difference is the depth that one is willing to go” - I felt like I found a bottom somewhere and still as I find words for this, more life and insight arises day after day in these new depths of the human experience.
