Understanding Depression

In this article, we explore the concept of depression from both Eastern and Western perspectives. We begin by looking at how depression is seen as a manifestation of disharmony between the individual and the universe, as well as being a result of being disconnected from one's true self and purpose in Eastern philosophy. Buddhism, Taoism, and Hinduism all provide guidance towards re-establishing harmony and balance through concepts like detachment, non-action, and reconnection with the true self and ultimate reality. On the other hand, the Western definition of depression comes from a psychological and medical perspective, where it is considered a mental disorder characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a loss of interest in previously enjoyable activities. The article concludes by suggesting that what is needed is deep rest, which is the space where one can realize that they are not what they thought they were and let go of assumed identities.
